Pocketed Coils Explained: What They Change in a Mattress
Pocketed coils are individually wrapped springs that move more independently than connected coil systems. They're common in modern hybrids because they preserve spring response while improving contouring and motion control.

Each coil sits inside its own fabric sleeve. Because the coils are not tied into one rigid moving unit, pressure can compress one region without forcing every neighboring spring to move as much.
Motion isolation
Pocketed coils generally transfer less movement than interconnected Bonnell or continuous-wire systems. They do not eliminate motion—the bed still contains springs—but they help localize it.
Contour and support
Independent movement lets the coil unit respond more precisely to different parts of the body. Manufacturers can also vary coil layout or zoning across the mattress.
Coil gauge
Gauge describes wire thickness; lower gauge means thicker wire. Sleep Foundation notes that mattress coils commonly fall around 13 to 17 gauge. Gauge influences firmness and durability, but should be considered with coil design and comfort layers.
Coil count
A higher count is not automatically better. Mattress size, coil diameter, zoning and design all affect the number. Treat count as one specification, not a standalone quality score.
